Day of Peace in Chicago
Last June, young students at two Chicago public schools created the “Day of Peace” campaign, complete with video PSAs and even memes to end violence. This project was a reaction to the 47 Chicago homicides in June of 2012, the highest there had been all that year.
The crazy thing is, these students, middle schoolers, see gun violence firsthand often. It is sad that 12 year olds have to stand up for a change to stop violence because they know about it personally. The teachers involved in the project said that it was a 50/50 learning/teaching experience because the students have a lot to teach the adults.
It is good to see that even through terrible things like homicides, young students continue to exude hope and goodness.
